Starring: Sunil Shetty, Mahima Chaudhary, Paresh Rawal, AsraniDirector: PriyadarshanRating:.Priyadarshan has given some hot films in the past—remember Gardish and its style of lighting. But, of late, he has fallen in the habit of making comedies, with some South Indian film as the inspiration.

Vora

Despite the laboured pace, Hera Pheri worked at the box office, chiefly because of the high voltage play-off between Akshay, Sunil and Paresh Rawal. Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal are back here, and so is Asrani, in a story that starts as a gharelu Hrishikesh Mukherjee film. But it then branches out to mix loud, north and south Indian slapstick. The result is funny at times, a bit worn-out in parts where comedy is used to carry forward predictable situations at a very laidback pace. But the end-result fails to satisfy the demands of a well-knit, mass-level comedy.

For this is what Priyadarshan has been trying to do—produce a light entertainer where you get a feel both of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and David Dhawan. Yeh Tera Ghar. Has Sunil Shetty as a ponga pandey; he, however, turns playfully nasty like Govinda to oust a tenant (Mahima Chaudhary) from his house.

Mahima too is modelled on the middle-class touch of the '70s. She is fiery and domesticated. In a significant shift from the formula, however, the protagonists do not fall in love after the first fight.

Their tension is played out much after the interval during which Sunil tries to match Mahima with Paresh, his one-time friend, now a police inspector in the local thana. Paresh's character raves and rants but ultimately coos before the feminine charms of Mahima. Priyadarshan lets the story move in a direction where you actually start thinking of a possible Mahima-Paresh Rawal team-up. This would have added a fresh element to the formula besides creating the scope for riotous situations.

But Priyadarshan backtracks and brings the hero-heroine together, which slides the film into cliched melodrama.
